Counselling FAQs

Please contact me at abby@afterglowcounselling.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

  •  Many people come to counselling because something doesn’t feel quite right, or because they’re feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to move forward.
  • You don’t need to be in crisis to come to counselling.
  • If you’re curious about counselling or wondering whether it might help, that’s often a good place to start.
  • An initial session can help you decide whether it feels right for you.

  •  Many people come to counselling feeling unsure where to start. We can take things at your pace and explore whatever feels most important for you in the moment.
  • Sometimes simply having space to talk helps things become clearer over time.

  •  This varies from person to person. Some people find short-term counselling helpful, while others choose to work longer term.
  • We can review things together as we go, and you’re always in control of how long you continue.
  • There’s no obligation to commit to a set number of sessions.

  •  Many people find online counselling to be just as effective as meeting in person.
  •  It offers the same confidential, supportive space to talk.
  •  Online sessions can feel especially helpful if travelling is difficult, if you feel more comfortable at home, or if you prefer the flexibility it offers.
  • We can also review together whether online counselling continues to feel right for you.

  • If you wish to begin counselling after your free 30-minute online consultation, we'll arrange your first session.
  • The first session is an opportunity for us to meet and talk about what has brought you to counselling. I’ll invite you to share as much or little as you feel comfortable with, and we’ll discuss how counselling might support you.
  • I’ll also explain how I work, answer any questions you may have, and go through practical details such as confidentiality.
  • This session lasts 50 minutes.
  • There’s no pressure to talk about anything before you’re ready.

  • Integrative counselling means I draw on different therapeutic approaches and adapt my work to suit your individual needs. Rather than using a one-size-fits-all method, I tailor sessions to you, your experiences, and what you find most helpful.
  • This flexible approach allows counselling to respond to you as a whole person.

  • Confidentiality is a very important part of counselling. What you share in sessions is kept private, in line with professional and ethical guidelines.
  • There are a small number of situations where confidentiality may need to be broken, such as if there is a serious risk of harm to you or someone else. I would always aim to discuss this with you wherever possible. More information is available in my privacy policy.

  • It’s completely okay to feel emotional during counselling. This is a space where you can express your feelings freely, and I’ll support you with care and sensitivity. We’ll always work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

  • You can get in touch using the contact form, email or phone number on my website.
  • I’ll usually respond within 48 hours to arrange an initial session or answer any questions you may have.

  • Face-to-face sessions take place in a peaceful therapy centre in the quiet, leafy suburb of Kings Norton, Birmingham. It is easily accessible by train, bus and there is ample parking and toilet facilities on site. More information will be provided before your session.
  • Please let me know if you have any special requirements and I will try my best to accommodate.
  • I also offer online and telephone therapy across the UK.

  •  I am committed to providing a counselling space that respects diversity in race, culture, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, neurodiversity, faith, and socioeconomic background.
  • I'm LGBTQ+ friendly and welcome neurodiverse clients.
  • Names and identities will be respected.
  • I offer flexibility with session length and pacing. While sessions are typically 50 minutes, I'm happy to adjust as needed-whether that means taking breaks, allowing time to move around, or shortening sessions due to health or energy needs.
  • If you need reasonable adjustments to feel comfortable accessing counselling, we can discuss this together.

  • Taking the step to start counselling can be significant and sometimes difficult. I prioritise offering appointments with low waiting times, so support is available when you're ready.

  •  Sessions cost £40 per online session. £50 per face-to-face session. Sessions last 50 minutes.
  • Concessions are available for OAPs, students, and those on low income.

  • Finding the right counsellor is important. An initial session gives you the opportunity to see how it feels to work together. If you decide I’m not the right fit, you’re under no obligation to continue, and I’m happy to discuss other options if appropriate.

  • Counselling is not a crisis service. If you need urgent support, please contact your GP, NHS 111, emergency services, or organisations such as Samaritans on 116 123.
